Machine Guns in a Fog.
THURSDAY'S GREAT BRITISH REARGUARD ACTION.
Paris, September 3. It ii officially reported' that on Tuesday, at midnight, the 'Allies' left wing had fallen hack towards the south-west, in consequence of the continuation of the German enveloping movement. The retreat was due lo the necessity for avoiding the accepting of a decisive action, in which they might feave been engaged under unfavorable conditions.
While the Allies were fighting at Bapaume, a French Territorial division, supported by four batteries of Regular artillery, were attacked by Germans on Thursday night. The Territorials retired in disorder. The Germans on Friday brought up.many machine guns in a dense fog, and a six hours' engagement was fought. The Territorials had suffered severely, when a British force came up unexpectedly and occupied the French positions, allowing the wearied Territorials to escane. The English fought .. brilliant rearguard action. In" the same fog- two French batteries fired ou eacl* other at tks sams time.
