ARCHBISHOP OF BOLOGNA SUCCEEDS TO THE PAPACY. The population ia 172,630. It was originally known as the Etruscan city of Felsona, then named by the Romans Bolonia, and in 1860 by universal suffrage was annexed to Piedmont, and now forms part of the Italian Kingdom. There are more than 70 churches in the city, most of them possessing valuable pictures and sculptures, ,relics and interesting monuments. The Cathedral is.dedicated.-fco St. PettuU .•AmohgHEe'l i public edifices, may be noticed its palaces and the two leaning towers, Degli Aisnelli and de Garisenda, the former I 256 feet in height, the loftiest in Italy. A famous university exists here, founded in the fifth century/ which had the honour of first drawing the attention.'; of Europe to the Roman law. Medicine is now chiefly studied. It ha's its observatory, galleries of sculpture, and painting, school of music etc.- The city has filled a considerable place in the history of Italy, from its haring been the residence of many illustrious families, and from its having been the seat of the school of the Caracoi, who restored a correct taste to painting. It was the birthplace of Aldrovani, Galvani, Malpaghi, Massighi, the Zanoki, the painters Albani, Guide, Domonichine and the three Caracci. In 1506 it was finally annexed to the Eccliastical states. In 1796 it was entered by Bonaparte, who expelled the papal authorities. After the revolutionary movements of 1848, an Austrian corps made it its headqquarters. This occupation of the Papal states by the Austrian troops was for many years the source of danger to the peace of Europe, Prance and Sardinia especially objecting to the Austrian occupation. In 1860 it formed part of th« Italian Kingdom as stated.
