When fire broke out aboard the steamer City of Chicago, the captain headed the ship shorewards and landed three hundred passengers, elad in their night clothes, at the Government breakwater, after a thrilling race against the flames. In order to avoid a panic, the crew did not call the passengers until the ship was approaching the breakwater. The vessel is expected to become a total loes.
