Sir George Iteid and the AgentsGeneral were given an audience by tho Queen at Buckingham Palace. They submitted proposals, sanctioned by their Governments, regarding the emigration to Australia of the widows of soldiery killed in tiie war, and of single women deprived of employment. The Queen expressed great pleasure at Australia's response to the war's call. Anxiety is felt by wheat importers lest the dislocation of steamer traffic will cause shortage of jute bags and interfere with Australasian shipments.
The South Wales' miners delegates, representing 200,000 men, decreed a weekly levy of sixpence per man and threepence per boy to the Prince of Wales' Fund.
At the Victoria Club, bookmakers collected £2OOO in a few minutes. Tho Prince of Wales' Fund is now £2,000,000. At Birmingham, on the first day of recruiting, 1293 were enrolled. 'Die Lord Mayor, Colonel Martineau, has resigned and volunteered for service.
The Earl of Lonsdale, inspecting the Second King Edward's Horse, said they were as good a lot of men as he had seen on parade. Ho admired the patriotic spirit prompting them to set such a good example to the manhood of the country at a time of unexampled crisis, and lie hoped they would soon go to the front.

Mr H. J. Tennant, Parliamentary ruder-Secretary at the War Oilico, speaking in the Houso of Common:;, stated that the Government proposes to substitute a system of bounties for prize-money.
