"NOISE SEEMS TO COUNT A LOT WITH THE GERMANS."

A wounded lancer, in a letter to his friends, says: "The Germans attach a lot of importance to massed artillery fire. For hours all the guns seem to play on one little sppt, until the din and noise of screeching shells overhead is terrible. Apparently it is intended to shatter our nerves. Most of us hare stuffed our ears with cotton wool. Noise seems to count a lot with the Germans. The cavalry have a trick >f thundering along so that the horses' hoofs make the most awful din, giving the impression that the whole sixth it sinking, added to which are their wild uncaaay shouts,
