LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Two first-offending drunkards were convicted and discharged at the Court this morning.

Among the things that are stated to have been affected by the war is Stratford milk, some of which is allegedly getting very thin!

Orders were made at the Court this morning in judgment summons cases as follows:—J. Masters and Son v. S. M. Fincham, ordered to pay £1 19s Bd forthwith, in default seven days’ imprisonment; Charlie Lockwood v. Thomas Lunam, to pay £1 12s forthwith, in default seven days’ imprisonment.

Before war was declared between Great Britain and Germany, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce decided to suggest that a conference of the various Chambers of Commerce in New Zealand should be held in Wellington on 7th September. A circular letter on the subject was accordingly sent out to the different Chambers, but owipg to the crisis which has now arisen it is probable that the idea of holding a conference will be abandoned.

Judgment by default was given in the following cases at the Court this morning; John Therkleson v. Albert Gillard" £6O 4s ’ 4d, costs £4 10s; Stratford County Council v. John Wm. Paulger, £6 19s 2d, cists £1 10s bd; H. A. Wurisch v. Alf. Richards, £5

13s, costs £1 8s 6d; E. A. Drake v. John Black. £25 2s, costs £2 14s; Leonard Rogers v. John Black, £4 19s 6d, costs 10s; T. I). Colson v. A. A. Cuthbertson, £1 Os 4d, costs ss.

A fine of 40s with costs 7s was imposed on Michael O’Halloran at the Court this morning, the charge against him being that on August 9th he rode a bicycle through Broadway at 7.20 p.m. without carrying a light. The Borough Inspector said the case was the one called at last sitting, in which it had been found that defendant had given a wrong name. The S.M. said in such cases the fine would he much heavier than in an ordinary case of breach of by-laws. ,
