Dunedin, August 23. Messrs Ross and Glendinning, Ltd., j have handed the Otago Daily Times Company a cheque for £3OOO as a con- : trihution to the patriotic fund, to be : distributed as follows: Dunedin £IOOO, Ohristchurch, Wellington and Auckland each £500; Invercargill, New Plymouth, and Gisbome, each £SO. EXEMPLARY PATRIOTISM, A most enthusiastic assembly attended the auction sale at Stratford on Saturday of stock donated by farmers as contributions to the Patriotic Fund. The sale was conducted by the combined auctioneers of Stratford ft Messrs Webster, Dobsoli and Go's, yards. Mr Webster clearly explained the object and conditions of sale and stated that the methods of obtaining bids and the reoffering of lots ire-* quemtly indulged in at gift auctions were not to be adopted. The purchaser of the first lot, however, had other views, and insisted on re-donating his purchase of the Patriotic Fund. From this, those attending the sale took their cue, with the result that not one lot was purchased without being redonated. Proceedings were electric, and the assemblage was good-humor-ed. The climax was reached when a heifer which had been donated seven times realised over £2O, and as a consequonco Mr Percy Budd, who was wedding the hammer at the time, fulfilled an undertaking and lifted his voice in song, "The British Navy." This was taken up by the crowd ,and at a later stage "Sons of the Sea" resounded over the yards. The sale concluded with the National Anthem. It was remarkable evidence of the patriotic feeling in the district, and it stands greatly to the credit of the donors and buyers of stock and to the auctioneers who altogether made the sale. The practical result is that the gift stock comprised 11 head of cattle, 35 sheep, 2 pigs, 1 dog, 2 hags of arti- ' chokes, realised the handsome sum of £219 10s.
Men in camp at Tahuna (Dunedin) now number 1442. The mounted art now over the full strength.
A euchre party and dance will be held in the Tuna Schoolroom on Friday next. Admission: Gents 2s 6d. ladies baskets, proceeds to go in aid of the Patriotic Fund.
