PRECAUTIONS AGAINST GERMAN ADVANCE.

Defensive preparations are being made to defend Antwerp. The woods have been cut down and the villages destroyed so as to deprive the Germans of cover. DUEL BETWEEN RIFLES AND ARTILLERY.

DAY AFTERNOON.

The Germans while advancing on Louvain mat a battalion of infantry with machine guns, Ihe Belgians hurriedly lined the road, entrenching themselves in the fields on ei tlier side. Fifty Belgian lancers went out to scout, when suddenly a large force of Uhlans swept over the hill top. The lancers withdrew upon the entrenched infantry, and a duel, rifle versus artillery, continued for an hour. The, Germans entered Brussels at four o’clock on Thursday. The Belgian authorities announced that firing upon the German patrols would he punished as a criminal offence. The railway bridges at Brussels were loft intact to avoid the destruction of the town.
