BELGIUM’S HISTORIC INTEREST.
I To the student of military history, all Belgium i s of historic interest, savs the Christchurch Press. In Mr Ki filing’s vivid phrase, every mile ol 'it has been “man-handled,” most ol it over and over again. But the German advance is now touching ground that is of special interest to British people. A message refers to operations at Wavre, one of the places that figured in the tremendous drama of June IHth, 1815. Some ton miles west of Wavre, is Waterloo itself, and at any moment we may hear' of fighting on that historic field. It would he one of thei ironies of history if another battle were fought on tire ground, this time between the British, the French, and the Belgians on one side, and the descendants of Blucher’s Prussians on the other. The seat of Government .in Belgium has been removed from Brussels to Antwerp. There will he no ball at Brussels to correspond to the one given by the Duchess of Richmond ninety-nine years ago, which 1 was attended by Wellington when'lie ! should have been ■at the front Watching his great 'antagonistA But in 1815-‘Ndpo-loon, thanks hoi -the rapidity of his movements. 1 and the poor means of ' i in those' : times, quvi prisenli. both Wellington and Brussels. ‘ Th'ero is no surprise to-day.
