A prohibition order was issued at the Court this morning against a man on the application of his son.
A total eclipse of the sun takes place to-day, when the central line of totality will extend over the greater part of Europe and Asia.
The libel case, Robert McNab versus the Dominion newspaper, in connection with plaintiff's boon, "Historical Records of New Zealand," has been settled out of Court.
Judgment by defalt was given in the following cases at the Court this morning: E. A. Drake v. S. H. Alvis, £5 18s 9d, costs £1 13s 6d; H. R. Crawford v. Wm. Green, £5 Os 6d, costs £1 3s fid ; 0. G. Nightingale and Co.' v. Gfcorae Henderson,'£i ss, costs £l.
The Wellington City Council decided last night to form a nine-hole municipal golf links on a portion of the town belt. A nominal charge will be made for the use of the course, and it is estimated that there -will be an annual revenue-of £SOO, while ■ the. cost of the upkeep.will not exceed £3OO.
Mr Macalistor, for T. A. W. Nicholson, informed the Court this morning that work had heen done, as required, on a down pipe on the verandah of his premises in Broadway, the Borough Inspector having proceeded at the previous sitting on the matter. The Inspector said the work had been done on Thursday morning. A conviction without fine was recorded, defendant being-ordered to pay 7s costs.
Tiie railway revenue for the four weeks ended July 18 was £294,012, made up of £158,156 from the North Island, and £135,856 from the South Island. The expenditure in the same period totalled £228,039, the North Island absorbing £123,871 and the South £104,168. The total receipts to date since April 1 are: £1,270.358, and expenditure £889,388, or 70.80 per cent. The totals for the corresponding period last year (April-July) were: Receipts £1,228,118, expenditure £859,453, the per centage being 69.98.
Sergt. McNeely told the, Court this morning that it appeared that the defendant mentioned in a by-law case had given a wrong name, Constable Wade, Eltham, being unable to find him at the address given. The Borough Inspector said he knew defendant by sight, and the S.M. advised him to make personal inquiries in Eltham. If persons were proved, said the S.M., to have given a wrong name the fine would he at least douhled. If the Inspector managed to secure one conviction of the sort the practice would not he very common. Alfred Carter was fined ss, without costs, at the Court this morning for having on the night of August Bth driven a" gig in Broadway with only one light. William Sheriff was fined ss, with costs 7s, for driving a lorry in Fenton Street by night without lights. Defendant said he had been in the country and had not been able to get back before sunset. If, he said, lamps were always carried on a lorry they would frequently he broken. The, S.M. said carriers would have to keep lamps on their vehicles somewhere, failing which they would have to make sure of getting back to their yards befor > sunset. A conviction without fine or costs was imposed in the case against A. A. Cuthbertson, charged with allowing his horse t< wander in Romeo Street, defendant showing that the horse got free owing to Mr Divehall not being aware that it was in a certain paddock.
