AN UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT.

The well-known Socialist and peace advocate, Rosa Luxemburg, who is reported to have been shot by the Germans a few days ago, was recently sentenced at Frankfort-on-Main, to a year’s imprisonment on a charge of having “invited German workmen no-' to take up arms against their F rench brothers” in the event of war against France. In view of the fact that the prosecuting counsel had to admit that there was no improper intention in th speech, the sentence was consider . simply monstrous, and simply a pretext on which to isolate one of the most active and talented members of the German Social Democratic Party. The sentence aroused public opinion, and pending the hearing of the appeal which was immediately entered, Rose Luxemburg was set at liberty, notwithstanding a demand to the con trary by the Public Prosecutor. She herself was able to take part at a huge meeting at Frankfort, organised as a protest against her sentence. Sinsaid that this sentence would not frighten anybody, and that members of the Social Democratic Party would continue to fight militarism. She openly protested against Germany entering upon war and was shot by order of the I authorities.
