Effect on Local Bodies
VIEWS OF STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCILLORS. At this morning's .meeting of the Stratford County Council the chairman (Cr. W. Hathaway) said that not only the Dominion, but the Empire ait largo found themselves in a rather unsatisfactory position, and he was afraid it would rebound on the local bodies. Ho thought the Stratford County Council would have to go slow. It had to be remembered that the producers of the Dominion might not get the usual prices for their produce. Although it was getting to eb the time of year when work should be put in hand, personally he did not believe in doing work unless it was absolutely necessary. The Council should congratulate the Premier and the Minister on the action taken for the defence of the Dominion and the assistance of the Empire as a whole.
O. ChrisLoffel thought producers should be urged to produce as much ns possible, even though the usual prices were not secured, as the lend supply would he an important factor in the war.
Ci'. Walter said that Ins opinion was that the chairman was rather pessimistic. He had sufficient faith in the British. Navy to believe that ah Zealand produce would reach Great Britain safely and would bring normal prices. The chairman exp l, ’ned that he had only mentioned the price of produce in view of its probable effect on the revenue of the Council. (Continued on page P>.)
