Customhouse returns show that exporters’ confidence in Britain s command of the sea has been restored. Shipments of butter and meat overseas have regained normal. Twentythree steamers have been taken up as troopships. Though considerable numbers of workers, particularly in the mining districts, have been thrown idle, the Federal and State Governments are working together to minimise the dislocation of trade and unemployment. The Lord Mayor’s fund is £16,000, and the other funds arc swelling rapidly. The Cricket Association donated £25.
Mischa Elman, the noted violinist, says his country -(Russia) can be depended on to take her part well in the campaign. She is able to put eight million soldiers in the field.
