Herbert Ashinan has heen discharged, there being no evidence connecting him with the death of the young woman, Houghton. Melbourne, August 15. A session of the congress of the twelve scientific sections met at the University, when addresses v. ere delivered and sixty interesting papers read. Degrees were also conferred. Prof. Cherry, in a paper on a ten inch rainfall, drew the conclusion that with the assistance of soluable phosphates profitable crops could be .■own on less then ten inches of winter rainfall. Professor Bateson was installed as president, and delivered an address on heredity.
