The meeting convened by the Mayor last night was most enthusiastic, the hall being crowded. Patriotic speeches Hero made by the Mayor and Messrs Burnett, K. B. Ross, Crawford, and Lieut-Col. Stevenson. "God Save the King" and "Rule Britannia" were sung over and over again. A resolution was unanimously carried pledging the district to support the Empire in every possible way and a large committee was appointed to canvass the district. Over £2OO was subscribed in the room. Gilts were received of six horses, a spring dray and one hundred hams from the Woodville Bacon Co. Another meeting was held afterwards, when sixty ex-voluntesrs and contingenters stepped forward as one man and offered their services to the Defence Department in any capacity.' In accordance with the scheme outlined by the promoters of the Patriotic Meeting held at the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, a committee of ladies to organise working guilds was formed under the management of Mr Percy Thomson (chairman) and Mr S. Maealisfer (.lion, secretary). The committee has already got to work and a considerable quantity of materia! is now being made up into the various articles recommended by the Defence authorities as suitable for the men going to the front. in addition to the chairman and lion secretary the committee consists ol the following ladies and gentlemen :—Mesdames 0. Curtis, C. Penn, Riera, F. Dickson, Prentice, Middleton and Massey; and local clergymen of all denominations, including the Captain of the Salvation Army.
