MEM READILY RESPOND EM ALL QUARTERS. , There .was quite a largo crowd in Croat of;the local Defence Office last light, t!ie reason being -that the local Territorial' officers were enrolling men for the proposed •expeditionary force. . A- good number of names wore taken i and • further applications are still arriving. About ■ sixty men wore enrolled at New Plymouth last night, one man cycling thirty-live miles in order to apply. At Timaru seventy men who were in the South African campaign volunteered for service and at Napier the Defence Office ! was literally besieged ■rich applicants. EM ROLLS MG' VOLUNTEERS.11; 77 I Applications for enrolment as mounted volunteers in the Defence Force are invited by advertisement in this issue. All present Territorials will receive preference. Personal application should be made at once to Lieutenants Wilson; Crawshaw aikl fames. t Those desiring to apply for places ■ in the force should bear in mind that application is to ho made through,the local Territorial commander or the local Defence Office, and not through hejadquarters at Hawera. IN REGARD TO TRADING WITH AN ENEMY. Wellington, August 7. An Extraordinary. Gazette contains a, Royal proclamation by the Governor, at the command of the King, .setting forth the law and policy with regard to trading with an enemy, it sets out that as a state of “war exists with Germany all persons arc warned not to carry on trade with it or for it. Ships are not to leave for any German ports or to communicate with them. No contracts or policies may Ire entered into for the benefit of the Germans, nor may payments be made for their benefit under existing policies or contracts. In respect of losses due to the belligerent; action of His Majesty’s forces, any contraventioin of law will expose the rtfl’ender to penalties provided Transactions not treasonable, and not for the time being expressly prohibited, and which hut for war would he lawful, are permitted. “Persons” applies to corporate bodies or mi incorpora to bodies when persons have an interest in houses or branches in some other country or in Germany. This proclamation docs not apply to trading intercourse carried on solely by such houses or branches.
