LOCAL AND GENERAL.
In the football carnival at Sydney, New South Wales beat Tasmania by 189 to 57, states a cablegram to-day.
Judgment by default was given in the following cases at the Court this morning:—Thomas 11. Mounsey v. T. K. Thompson, £35 11s 6d, costs £3 13s; Court and Cottier v. John Douglas Grantham, £4 4s, costs 11s; Tom L. Paget v. E. J. Williams, £25 15s, costs £2 16s.
Exemption from Territorial service until called upon by the Defence Department was granted to W. R. Bennett, Toko, at the Court this morning. The Department made no objection.
Dr. Cameron appeared at the Court this morning on a charge of allowing the chimney in his premises to be on fire on July -29th. He pleaded guilty and stated that he had made a donation to the Fire Brigade when f
they turned out. A conviction without fine was recorded. John Martin was fined 10s, with costs 7s, for riding a motor cycle on a footpath and Gus Wunsch was fined similarly for driving a gig with only one light.
The Provincial Convention of the W.C.T.U. was held at Manaia on Wednesday in the Town Hall. Mrs Douglas, district president, presided, and a large number of ladies were present, delegates being present from Wanganui, Hawera, Ngaere, Stratford, and New Plymouth. Luncheon was provided by the Manaia ladies, and the weather was all that could he desired. The local meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held on Thursday afternoon in the Methodist Church, Broadway.
