Immediately on receipt last night of the extraordinary cablegram recording the declaration of war between Germany and Russia the “Post” issued an “extra,” copies of which were forwarded to the churches and posted throughout the town, residents thus being acquainted with the startling news at the earliest possible moment. The Borough Council meets this evening. The Lowgarth dairy factory opened on Saturday and the Ngaere factory opened to-day. Joseph Cook, P.C., receives the pride of place among the contributors to the August number of “Life,” just to hand. -Mr Cook tells how a Prime Minister conducts bis daily round—with its multifarious duties and its scant pleasures. Details supplied by Mr T. H. Penn show that during July there were twenty wot days, the total fall being 5.1 Gin. One six days the fall was under a tenth of an inch, the fall on two days being a hundredth of an inch.
