The exhibition of draughts playing by "Professor Blooanwhite" on Saturday afternoon and evening was well attended by local exponents of the silent game. As many as nine players were engaged simultaneously, and the rapidity and comparative ease with which the "Professor" accounted for them convinced them that there were many moves in the game of which they had never dreamt. Frequent applause punctuated the exhibition, when some brilliant move was sprung on an unsuspecting player,! and most of his pieces were swept from "the board. The Professor did not always have it his own way; two of his opponents (Messrs E. Hine and Weston) kept him think, ing, and eventually scored the only two draws secured during the exhibition. Although most of the'local champions tried their skill, none were suecessful in winning a game. On account, of the great interest which has been aroused in draughts circles, it is probable that a club will be started. A football match has been arranged between the Eastern sub-Union and Stratford Seniors on August 6th, proceeds in aid of the sporting candidate, Miss M. Hignett (Red, and Black). THE HAWERA CARNIVAL. Tfye cash prize of £l, given to th» candidate making the most progress, goes to Miss Clarehurt. It does not necessarily follow that the I ', leading candidate should win the weekly cash prize, although in the present week it is a coincidence that the candidate heading the roll should receive it.
