A MEMORIAL TO CLARKE.

A memorial to Captain Clarke,’ who ivas Captain Cook’s companion, was unveiled at Petropavlovsk in the presence of the vice-Governor and officers of the warship Newcastle, which was sent specially to the ceremony.
Captain Clarke accompanied Captain Cook on his last voyage, being in charge of the Discovery, while Captain Cook commanded the Resolution. They sailed from Plymouth in July 1776, the Admiralty having resolved to determine the disputed question as to there being a northern communication between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In November, 1778, the party reached the Sandwich Islands where) they were to pass the winter. It was here Captain Cook met his death, being slain in a quarrel with the natives at Hawaii.
