FOOTBALL.
THE RUGBY CAME. Referees have been appointed for this week's matches as follows: Thursday, July 23.—Tukapa v. High School, at 1.15 p.m. (curtain-raiser), Mr T. Petty. Saturday, July 25. Okato v. Tukapa, at New Plymouth, Mr Humphries j Clifton v. Inglewood, at Inglewood, Mr F. Spurdle; Star v. Stratford, at Stratford, Mr Hill. The Clifton senior team for the play-off with Waimate on the 30th, at Stratford, will be chosen from the following eighteen :—C. Tate, Goodwill, Abbott, Bertrand, Kupe, C. Crowley, Waka, V. Tate, R. Taylor, Loveridge, Lash, Burkett, Hicks, R. Thomas, Berntsen, Fisher, P. Jones, and Revell. THE RANFURLY SHIELD. TARANAKI v. MANAWATU. On Thursday next, at New Plymouth, the Taranaki representative Rugby football team will bo called upon for thesecond time this season to defend the Ranfurly Shield, the iManawatu representatives being the challengers. The local Union has arranged special trains lor the occasion, and local Rugby enthusiasts will lie able to see the game and return the same evening. The Ranfurly Shield gives an added zest to Taranaki football this season, and no doubt followers of the old Rugby game will roll up in large numbers at New Plymouth on Thursday.
