Whangarei Tragedy.
—. HEAD SPLIT WITH AN AXE. | - i HUSBAND AND WIFE, | I —- $ [Per Press Association.] Whangarei, July 21. ' Mary Mammon, a middle aged woman, wife of Daniel Hammon, proprietor of the Huimai boardinghouse, was found in the kitchen heforo six o'clock this morning with the hlado of a small axe buried to the haft ill the left fside of her skull. Her screams brought boarders on the scene, but the woman was then unconscious. There was then no sign of her husband. Doctors withdrew the blade, and removed the victim to the' hospital. Her condition is hopeless. The husband was subsequently found hiding among some tininer stacks on the wharf and was arrested. The Haminons had threo sons and one daughter, the eldest child being 14 years of age. BEFORE THE COURT. PRISONER REMANDED UNTIL 29th INST. THE WOMAN SUCCUMBS. Hammon appeared at the polic* court this morning charged with attempted murder, and was remanded until the 29th inst. The woman has since succumbed to her injuries.
