* WELLINGTON WINTER MEETING-j IPkii Piiebs. AflaoounoK.l Wellington, July 19. The winter meeting oi tlie \\ oilington Racing Club concluded yesterday. The course, owing to recent rain, was in a very heavy condition,and in consequence times were slow. Speculation on the totalisator was brisk,the sum oi £41,171 10s going through the machine, compared with £30,467 for the corresponding day last year, making a total for the meeting oi £75,318, as against £50,031 10s. The large increase is principally'due to the fact that during this meeting there were eight races a day, compared with seven on previous occasions. Results: — Second Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, of loOsovs., two miles.—7 Grit Lawless 1, 8 Waiwetu 2; 4 Makiri 3. Time, smiu 59sec. Crofton Handicap, of MOsovs., seVeu furlongs.—2 Try Fluke 1. 7 Con/.iska 9.0, 2; 3 Merry Gain 10.9, 3. Tiifie, liiiiir 38 2-osec, July Steeplechase, of 500sovs., two miles and a-half.—l Sir Lethe 11.4, 1 : 4 Glahmore 11.9, 2; 7 Rapid 9.8, 3. All but Sir Lethe and Glemnore ran off at the double in front of the stand. Won by a furlong. Time, smin 166 1-5 sec. Winter Oats, of 25050v5., one mile.— Haskayne 10.13, 1; Bluestone 10.4, 2; Commotion 9.5, 3. Won by two and £ half lengths. Time, Imin 50 -4-oseC. Final Hurdle Handicap, of 300sovs.; one mile, and three-quarters.—7 Idealism orchy 9.5, 3. Won easily by five lengths. Time, 3rnin 32 2-ssec. Kia Ora Handicap, of UOsovs., six furlongs.—l George 10.2, 1; 5 Grand Idea 9.0, 2; 9 Lady Daylesford 9.2, 3. Won by three lengths- Time, Imin 25 2-ssec. A London cabolgram states that , the stewards' at Sandown sampled the mliva of the placed horses in the Milburn Selling Plate. The enquiry was ’impartial,' and it was not suggested that there was any illegal practice. REPORT OF THE V.R.C. The annual report of the Victoria Racing Chib shows that the expendiuro exceeded the receipts by £8232, which was caused by extensive improvements. The stakes totalled £74,372, including £01.600, added money. Excepwtit, :he .-yAutumn meeting, which-carried a "loss of £181 : , all the meetings showed good profits. The Spring meeting was £20,077 to die good. Control by the stipendiary stewirds is working satisfactorily.
