THE UPPER HOUSE.
THE NEW MEMBERS. The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken came to New' Zealand in 1882, and lie and Hr Geo. Wilson started business as general merchants in Wellington. Mr Aitken was Mayor of Wellington from November, 1899, until May, 1905. Ke was elected to represent the City of Wellington in the House of Representatives in 1902, and was re-elected for Wellington East, in 1905, but did not stand at the next election. Mr Aitken is at present chairman of the Wellington Education Board. , 'Hie Hon. R. K. Simpson, of Bonnie Glen, near Marten, arrived in New Zealand in 1859, and engaged in the sheep gracing industry, and this, combined with agriculture, he has followed up ever since.
The Hon. Gilbert Carson was born at sea op hoard the ship Jane Gillord, on her way to Auckland in 18-12. In 1374 Mr Carson purchased the ‘‘Wanganui Chronicle,” and he lias been associated with the management of that journal ever since. He has.been a prominent worker in the cause of temperance reform. In 1896 Mr Carson was elected to represent Wanganui in the House of Representatives. Previously he had contested the Wanganui seat on four successive occasions, in his second attempt he was only 27 votes behind his opponent, the late Mr Ballance. The Hon. John Fisher is a farmer in the Waikato district, in the early days he was one of -the pioneers in Mangaere, near Auckland. Later both he and Ins brother settled on the land at Pukerinm, near Cambridge. He lias I always taken a very keen interest in | local government and public matters ] generally, and has hold quite a number I of positions on local bodies. The Hon. John MacGregor is a native of Perthshire, and is a member ol j the legal linn of Duncan and MacGregor, Dunedin, and was for many I years one of the most active members lof the’Otago Education Board. It i» 'over twenty years since Mr MacGregor was appointed a member of the Legislative Council, on the nomination |of the Ballance Government, and it is probably owing to his own action that he has not been twice reappointed since then. Shortly before the end ol his seven years’ term, Mr MacGregor intimated to the then Premier (Mr Seddon) that he could not accept nomination from his Government for the reason amongst others, that a member of the Seddon Government, who had been a member of the Ballance Government that appointed him. had animadverted upon his action in opposing certain policy measures. .The Hon. Andrew Thomas Mngiuuity is an old colonist, having been horn in Wellington on March 11, 1819, and is a solicitor in practice in Nelson Ha has been for some years, and still is, a member of the Victoria College Council, representing the Education Boards of the Middle District, and has, also been a member of the Nelson Haroor Board. Mr Maginnity has had considerable military experience.

Richard Monro, oi Katajjoi, was a pioneer settler ol Canter- : bury. He first eontested the Kaipoi constituency in 1 SS.'i, and in L'dO was 1 elected. At the following election Mr I). Bnddo non the seal, bid in HMb Mr Moore defeated Mr Bnddo and had a second term in Parliament. Mr Moore is at present; chairman of (he Lyttelton Harbor Board, j The* Hon. T. Macfiibbon lias been clo-cly identilied with public Lde at Matanra. He was at one time chairman of the Southland County Council. it member of the uisfciicfc Hospital Board, and he was for nearly twenty years one of the Otago and Southland School Commissioners representing the Southland Education Board, and lie was Mayor of Mataura on several occasions. He is now a member of the Otago ('niversity Council representing the Southland Education Board. In ! 91)5 lie stood for Parliament against W Mbs’ah, hut was defeated. The Ron. 0. Samuel and Hon. i)r.
