PERSONAL.
The death is announced from Dannevirke of Mr John Speedy, agad 86, the oldest settler of Herbertville, where he lived for 50 years. The deceased came to the Dominion when he was 12 years of age in the ship Lord William Bentinck. He • resided at the Hutt and Puketitiri before going to Herbertville. He leaves nine daughters and three sons. His wife predeceased him four years ago. Mr T. A. Rabone and Mr T. dimming, of the Public Works staff, Kohuratahi, were the recipients of presentations last night in the local Town Hall on the occasion of their departure for Nelson. , Mr Keller i occupied the chair, and after a very pleasant evening spent in song and gtory, Mr Rabone was presented with a gold chain, while Mr Gumming received a travelling rug and a case of pipes. Among the items rendered during the evening wore songs by Messrs Little and Armstrong.
