TUNA SCHOOL CONCERT.
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. "Tuna is somewhere about three and a-half miles from Midhirst and lies to the north-east of Stratford," said Mr W. Ha'thaway, chairman of the annual school concert and social which was held in the schoolroom last night. This remark was made in the course of an address to the'■gathering at the close of the concert programme, when Mr Hathaway took occasion to thank all the performers and those who had assisted in making the evening such a pleasant one. The teacher (Mr Thomas) was particularly mentioned and thanked for his trouble in training the children in the various items, and in this connection Miss Jones, it was also stated, gave splendid assistance in tutoring the musical midgets for the occasion. The chairman extended the thanks of the community to Mr R. Masters, member of the Education Board, for his kindness in being present and presiding at the concert. Mr W. Rogers, membef of the Education Board, was unavoidably absent. The stage was decorated with evergreens and flags, and with the orthodox "drop-scene" and "wings" was something unique for the occasion. The following was the programme : Overture, Miss Cockerton; song, "The Flower Girl," Miss TJlla Goodwin; pianoforte solo, Miss L. Kovaleski; recitation, "A Difficult Sum," Misses L. Forbes and E. Wellington; song, "Stars that gem the Trackless Sky," Master E. Bloxham and H. Tristram ; recitation, "A Laugh in Church," Infants; song, "Roaming in the Gloaming," Harold Tristram; recitation. "Wing Fat," Master Heber Tristram ; ,song, "Bye Baby Bye," Infants; recitation, "'Butterfly's Ball," Miss Jessie Yickers; song, "Britannia's Boys in Blue," Senior Boys; recitation "The Dumb Wife Cured," Master E. Bloxham ; song, i'The Dream-Man's Coming," Senior Girls; recitation, "The Enchanted Shirt," Master Harold Tristram; song, "The Lazy Boy," Master E. Bloxham, Misses L. Forbes and E. Wellington. Kovale'ski, Ida Bloxham. Mr Masters addressed the gathering in a happy speech. He congratulated ill concerned upon the excellent showing of the pupils in the several items and also upon their good conduct and manners during the evening. He referred seini-jocularly to the fact that school committees cried out because the annual grants from the Board were not large enough, but it seemed to him (the speaker) that were it not fov that, the parents and friends of the children would not he brought ' together upon such pleasant occasions as this. There was the incentive to join' together for a common object. MiMasters said it always gave him pleasure to go out to Tuna, and ne would be pleased at any future time to accede to their wishes in that respect.—(Loud
applause). Tbe programme was then proceeded with as follows:—Pianoforte solo, Miss A. Kovaleski; dialogue (an amusing skit on housekeeping and tho servantgirl trouble), the parts being taken hy*Miss Jones ('"Mrs Prim"), Miss Plows ("Matilda Jane"), Mr K. Jones ("Richard"), and .Air A.'Vickers ("The Postman"); song, "When the sunset turns to the Ocean Blue to Gold," Miss L. Hamblyn; song, "Song of Sleep," Mr Geo. Knox; song, "Silver Bell," Miss Milne; song, "Waiting for the Robert. E. Lee," Brother Sambo, Mr L. "Plows; recitation, Mr Goodwin; song, "The Gift," Miss Blythe; song, "Cabbages and Roses," Miss E. Knox ; song, "Love's Old Sweet Song," Mr <Vj. Jones; song, "Why do Summer Roses Fade," Miss Julian. The chairman's address was here given, and a sumptuous supper was then handed round to the assemblage, the housewives of the district earning many and sincere eni'iuniuins for the excellence of tin ("»«■■■ !' •■'■- i -d. The dance aftei ih< H was well attended, and for t!.. •" <"V generation at any rate put a ;o. ! finish upon Tuna's 1914 school concert, which will lie pleasantly recalled.
