Wellington, July 7. Two of the Chinese crew of the steamer Northern, while smuggling opium ashore, were caught by a Customs official last night and to-day each was fined £25 or 2 months\imprisonment. The shipping company paid the fines in preference to entering into £IOO bonds and having to send the offenders out of the country at the expiration of the sentence, • Wellington, July 7. A conference of unions convened by the Federation of Labor for the purpose of further solidifying the forces of Labor and linking up with the recentl y formed Federation of Labor in Australia met this morning, .74 delegates being present. The Hon. J. Rigg, Wellington, was appointed chairman, Mr I). J. Sullivan, deputy chairman, and Mr P. H. Hiekey, secretary. The press was excluded and a press committee was set up to supply reports. Only formal business was transacted this morning. Resolutions were passed allowing Labor M.P's, to take part in the deliberations of the conference. , *
