It favoured the Referenda bills as a means of securing industrial peace and dealing with trusts, combines, and monopolies, including the Beef Trust, which he declared already had secured a hold in Australia. Other proposals were State-owned Overseas steamers and an atlantic cable, national insurance, the initiative and the referendum, development of the Overseas markets, a Commonwealth Bank, a uniform railway gauge, the careful nursing of military and naval defence (but the Party were relentlessly opposed to borrowing for Defence), continuance of the maternity bonus, provision for funds for prevention and the cure of cancer, consumption, and red plague. Mr Fisher added: "We fully favor reciprocal relations with New Zealand, Canada, and other Dominions, and every means are being adopted to draw them closer together.
