The Herald, commenting on the extension of the German shipping line to New Zealand, says: "Hitherto the European trade to New Zealand was carried almost exclusively by British ships. As members of the British Empire, one must regret that their virtual monopoly is soon to be lost, but even tho most inveterate Antipodean Chauvinist can hardly find any grievance in this."
