HOW BROOKES WON. A SLASHING CAME. THE GERMAN GIVES A FINE DISPLAY. (Received 1.40 a.m.) London, July 1. The final was played in a tropical heat. Brookes’ service was particularly strong for the first two sets. The third set went with the service until Brookes led 5—4. Froitzheim equalised and won Brookes’ service, and then went out with a love game. Brookes never led in the fourth set. The last set was thrilling. Froitzheim broke through the Australian's service, and at the fifth game led 3—2. Brookes squared and led 5—4, and won the first point in the German’s service with a wonderful pass, hut lost two consecutive services.
At 6—6 Brookes led 40—30, when he double-faulted, and but for the line umpire’s wrong decision Froitzheim should have led. At 7—6 in the last Brookes was twice within a point of winning the set. The winning point was scored by the most wonderful shot of the match through a back-hand pick-up. The victory was frantically cheered. Wilding and Brpquedis met, and there was an unexpectedly good match. Bavin’s (not Davson’s) seventeen-year-old partner repeatedly passed the champion on the backhand.
