The latter indulged in hard hitting to the base line. Doust, in the doubles, though troubled with neuritis in the shoulder, smashed and volleyed with great vigor, running the third set to 9—9, when it had to be abandoned for bad light. Doust. and Mavrogordato defeated Parke and Beamish, 6—2, 3—6, 9—7, I—6, 7—5; Brookes beat Gore, 7—5 6—l ; 6—2; Dunlop and Harding defeated Tinglegreen and Thomas, 6—4, 6—o, 6—3; Brookes and Wilding defeated llitchie and Prebble, 6—l, 4 6, 6—o, 6—4; Mavrogordato and Doust defeated Crawley and Davison, 3—6, 6—3, 5—7, 6—3, 9—7. In the All-English Plate, Ingram defeated E. Yencken, 2—6, 6 —3, 6—l. A. Yencken defeated Huntei, •6—4, 6—2. The games were played under a blazing sun, in the presence of an enormous attendance! Doust’s splendid cross-court shots and placing Avon the third set, and Mavrogordato’s line form the fifth. Gore played splendid tennis. He was leading 5—4, and went within a point of winning the first set. Gore lost some of his sparkle in the second set, Brookes’ Avizard volleys not allowing him to use his forehand drives. Brookes has reached the semi-final. llitchie and Prehbje lost the first, set badly. They adopted aggressive tactics in the second and led to I—l. Prebble was particularly brilliant. BOXING. ' Loii tor?, June : 27. Johnson defeated Mum on points. Up to the tenth round the lighting! was fairly equal, but after that it was obvious that Moran was 'mMassed. He weakened perceptibly in the later rounds. There was much in-n lighting. Moran hung to Johnson to save himself. O’Neil (Westport) and Sewart (Timaru) fought a fifteenround draw, the fight being described by the ring-siders as the best, seen on the Coast for a long time. Stewart look.the count for seven' seconds in the first round, but fought well thereafter, O’Neill, however, looking the fresher of the two at the finish. Senior (Westport) defeated Boreham (Dunedin') in a special bout of six rounds, winning on points after a good fight, in which Senior showed Himself undoubtedly the better man. HOCKEY. Hamilton, June 27. In the Norden Cup match Waikato boat. Taranaki by 15 goals to nil. The Taranaki rep. hockey team left Auckland by the Main Trunk express last night after playing Waikato at Hamilton for the Norden Cup on Satwhen they were defeated by 5 goals to nil. The Stratford members of the Taranaki representatives were Messrs Sargent, Wheeler, Curtis and Priest, and they arrive home to-night by the mail train. SWIMMING. [United Pmssa Association.] London, June 27. Miss M. Kenny, an Australian, swam from the Palace Pier at Brighton to Shoreham (live miles) in 143 minutes—a record, despite the rough sea. SCULLING. London, June 26. Paddon early in the week sprained his Vris,t, and has not rowed for a week. Consequently he lias increased his weight. He hopes to resume on Monday. Barry consented to a postponement of the race, and articles wore accordingly signed, a further £IOO a side being deposited. The race will start at 2.45 p.m. on September G. Barry hopes that the public will subscribe Paddou’s expenses, otherwise ho will allow Paddon two-thirds of the steamboat receipts.
