A disastrous fire destroyed the Town Hall, the old newspaper offices, a garage, the Bank of Australasia, St. George’s chemists shop,and the district nurse’s quarters. The outbreak when first seen had a good hold. Nothing was saved from the hall, but most oi the things from the other places were saved. The Central Hotel was ‘ saved with difficulty. 'The fire broke out in the Town Hall. The Horticultural Society lost all its 'belongings, while the Otaki Maori Brass Band lost several instruments and £3O worth of music. The bank safes were later opened, and the contents found intact, but scorched. Richard Bevau 4s a big loser, his moving picture plant being destroyed. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
