LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Three inebriates were dealt with at the Court this morning, Messrs „ J. Masters and S. B. Hunter, J.P’s., being on the bench. One was convicted and discharged, another was fined os, and the other £l. Against one of them a prohibition order was granted.
A Wellington Press Association telegram states: The conference of members of the headquarters and district staffs' for considering improvements to the defence scheme opened this morning, Major-General Sir Arthur Godley presiding. The proceedings are expected to extend over two days. Included in the business for consideration will be Inspector-General Sir lan Hamilton’s report and recommendations on the recent conference cf senior Territorial officers.
During the bearing of a. small Native case in the Appeal Court Wellington (slates the Press Association), there was a discusison on costs. Justice" Edwards said he did not think the Public Trustee was entitled to any costs where he appeared by his office solicitors, and that he ought in such case to he considered as appearing in person. He further expressed the opinion that the Public Trust Department should not carry on a legal bureau for which there was no statutory authority, and that the practice should be discouraged. Justice* Hosking said costs should not he allowed to the Public Trustee where the office solicitor appeared unless such costs became part* of 'the estate concerning which the proceedings were taken, and they should not he paid into the common fund of the Public I rust Office to swell the profitsof that institution.
