Westport, June 27. . i' An examination of the stranded steamer Kauri, made by Captain Macdonald, the Union Company’s marine superintendent, shojred that there were .. holes in the bottom under Nos. 1 and 4 hfclds and the engine room, and that the tide is ebbing and flowing through the opening. The sugar stored in No. 4 hold has melte'd and entirely disappeared, while the other cargo is afloat. Captain Macdonald hopes he will be able to repair the damage sufficiently to enable the steamer to be floated. Work is now proceeding in covering the holes with iron plates. Pumps, hawsera, and other salvage gear is being I brought from Wellington by the*Terawfaiti and is being carted to the scene of the wreck.
