EDUCATION BOARD.

At the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board on Wednesday, there were present, Messrs H. Trimble (chairman), A. Morton, E. Marfell, A. T. Halcombe, W. Rogers, A. M. Bradbury, J. Young, G. A. Adams. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The chief inspector (Mr W. A. Ballanfcyne) reported as. follows on matters referred to him at last meeting:— Douglas Additions.—This school provided, according to the Department's scale, accommodation for 48 pupils. Tho roil number was 50, the highest attendance for any one day being 47. The average attendance for last year was 39 and for this year up to the time of the inspector's visit, 41. At the present time he did not think additions were warranted. He recommended that a curtain be supplied. to this school;, and that additional lighting be provided for the portion of the room thereby cut off. Makahfl Additions.—This school should provide accommodation for an average of 3$ pupils. The present roll number was only 26, and the average attendance for the present quarter to the 16th iust. was only As there was no likelihood of increase no recommendation'was made.

OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer (Mr C. H. Moore) reported that the residence at Raupuha was completed and alterations to the fencing were in progress. He recommended new outhouses at Huiroa. He submitted a plan of proposed alterations'in the Stratford infants school .'or converting the present assembly into a class room. He pointed out that the room was badly lighted and ventilated, and he proposed to put in <ky lights. To make a good classroom it would be necessary to raise the ceiling, place skylights round :hree sides of the roof, carry out the i'ront wall 10 feet, and form porches on each side. His plan would meet iilie case in the meantime, yet allow cor extensions at a later date.

GENERAL. l It was, decided to defray the cost of ledge plants and shelter trees for the \lareo school. The plan of alterations to the Stratford school will be submitted to the JOmmittee for inspection. A bicycle shed will be erected at the Stratford school, and the fireplaces will be attended to as requested by the committee. The following matters were referred to the overseer:—Attend, to repairs generally undertaken by the Board'"at the Cardiff residence; erect new lavatories at Huiroa.
