HUGHES’S HOLSTEIN HERD.

A STUDY IN "BLACK AND WHITE." A close view of pedigree stock is always worth a journey, and when the choice is given to a Taranaki farmer anyone can bet his boots thqt cattle will win every time. It cannot be wondered at, therefore, that when an opportunity was afforded the writer to have a look at a pedigree herd of Holsteins which was shortly to he disposed of by public auction the motor car was quickly hoarded and Tariki Road End (as Mr J. T. Hughes’s farm is known) was reached from Stratford 'in the course of half an hour’s run. It should be explained right here' that Mr Hughes is giving up dairying after about twenty years of the game, during which he had been so successful that he feels he can take a spell and leave the milking to younger people. Rut he does not do this without a sigh, as his heart has been in his herd, and the result of his twenty years’ dairying experience—principally in the Waverley district, but six years of w hich lie has latterly spent up this w ay —has left him with the conclusion that Holsteins are the stock for Taranaki. This, of ..course, is a highly debatable matter, hut the fact remains that every man is entitled to his opinion.\ As a study in "Black and White,” then, the animals to be seen at Tariki Road End farm would gladden the heart of any cattle man. la view' of the clearing sale on Thursday, July 2, a few notes concerning the lords and ladies of the Holstein harem will ho read with interest. Lord Clothildes, a three-year-old, is a Do Kol on botli sides of his pedigree, and was bred by Mr Newton King, pyhichris sufficient recommendation for this passing notice. The queen of the herd is Lady Pietertje Olothildos, who was bred by Mr Newton King, and was calved on September 12, 1909. ’She is credited with a record of 4271bs of butter in 210 days as a four-year-old. A fine yearling bull, Sir Neil Pietertje, is by Lord Clothildes out of this cow. Another of his progeny is Lady Dorothea Algarta., Some of the progeny of Lord Clothildes, showing fine quality, and bred by Mr Hughes, are Clothildas’ Buttercup, Mary Clothildes, Buttercup 11. and Mary 11. King Sogis Do Kol has been the property of Mr Hughes for one season only, having been bred by Mr A. H. Street, "Woodlands,” Bell Block. A pretty scene on the farm was a group of fifteen heifers of uniform quality all in calf to this young hull, and all of which must be good property for dairymen. The catalogue which” Mr Hughes has issued in connection with the sale gives full particulars of the lines on which all those anifnals are bred, and it is notable that they are all eligible for the Herd Book. Among the other cattle to be offered are 60 cows, half being young Holsteins and the other half Shorthorns and Jerseys. Of 100 weaner calves 38 are by Lord Clothildes. Needless to say all the herd is in fine condition and a credit to the vendor. As a further indication of Mr Hughes’ taste in this matter of blood, it may he mentioned that Lord Clothildes, who was purchased by him for 50 guineas when yet ten months [old, is a grandson of Sir Inka De Kol Pietertje, the celebrated bull now the property of the Government. The sundries on the farm will he offered as usual, and these, it was noted, were also in tip-top condition. For the convenience of intending buyers, a brake will meet the 9.30 train at the Tariki station on the morning of the 2nd prox., the sale commencing at 12.30 sharp. Breeders should obtain a catalogue from the auctioneers, Mr Newton King, and peruse fuller particulars contained therein.
