Horace Cramond, formerly manager for Thos Cook and Son, was charged at the Wellington Magistrate s Court to-day with embezzling £1430 between 15th April and 13th May. The police said that, when the defalcations weie suspected, Cramond was suspended, and while the investigation proceeding, he absconded to Sydney. Substantial bail was therefore asked for. Counsel for defence denied that Cramond absconded. He said h would make a statement, at the proper time. A remand was granted _ July 3, bail being allowed, self m £SOO and two sureties of £250 each. A Dannevirke Press Association telegram states that J. H. Redfer , grocer, was fined £3 and 7s costs for failing to allow leave to an employee to attend the annual temtorial training camp. Accused had applied foi exemption for the employer tvh.oh was granted on condition that the latter attended the casual cam which he did not do. Defendant intimated Jo the officer of the Defence Department that he would sooner pay the employee’s fine than lose his services.
