Winter Show.
HAWERA’S SPLENDID ADVT OPENED YESTERDAY. The fifth Dominion Winter Show was opened at Hawera yesterday, th* weather being cold hut fine. The usual standard of this excellent show is well maintained, all the departments being well tilled. As soon as the building was opened there were a good many spectators in attendance, and the attendance was considerable in the afternoon. As usual there is an excellent showing of factory butter and cheese, and the show of farm produce is a large and meritorious one. The district courts are also a big feature, the produce being highly varied and displayed to the best advantage. The display made by the Department of Agriculture is a fine one, embracing every department of farming. The display has a room to itself and constitutes one of the most attractive features of the show. The show of machinery is as full and comprehensive as usual. The dogs are a numerous section, and the show of poultry is exceptionally large. The various stalls deal with almost everything under the sun, and the usual number of side-shows provide a full quota of interest and entertainment. Th» home industries and school sections are well filled, and there is a good, exhibit by members of the South Taranaki Photographic Club. Everything in connection with the show worked admirably and reflected great credit on the secretary, Mr A. M. Conroy and his staff.
STRATFORD PRIZE-WINNERS. In the fancy work division, Miss Anderson secured first prize for best exhibit of point lace, and Master Griffin Jones (Tarik[) was second in the class for exhibit of ribbon work. In Langshans, Mrs C. Downey secured first prize for black hen. She also secured first prize for Columbian Wyandotte pullet and for hen, cock, and pullet, in the barred Plymouth Rock class. W. Y. Kirkman secured first and second prize for black red game cock or cockerel, and second and third for hen or pullet. In hen or pullet, any other variety of game, Harry Masters secured a third ticket. T. Kirkwood, H. Yoyle and A. Kenny took most of the prizes for English setters. C. McLeod got first prize for the open and novice classes in bulldogs. F. Dobson was second in the open class, third in the novice, and v.h.c. in the limit class. In rough-coated collies R. G. Steer was first in limit bitches and second in open bitches. J. R. Donaldson, Whangamomona, was first in puppy black cocker spantefe: W'. Smith and J. Mills were first and second in the open class for field spaniel dogs (any color). A. C. Walshe secured seven firsts and two seconds in the fox terrier classes, and D. Bain, Toko, got a first and a second. J. Brake got a first prize ticket in the dais for open Skye terrier bitches.
TRADE EXHIBITS. Newton King. Mr Newton King’s take* up a good deal of space in the machinery hall. The section devoted to seeds includes exhibits of Garton’s and Hurst’s seeds and Sterling seed* and manures. fhe machinery includes the Melotte separator, McRidd milking machine and the LisCormick agricultural machinery, the ter oil engine. A. W. Reid Milker. The A. W. Reid Milking Machine Co. has, as usual, a stand, where the merits of their well-known machine can be inspected by visitors. McMillan and Fredric. Messrs McMillan and Fredric are consistent exhibitors at the show, and this year they have a very attractive display which includes every description of dairying machinery. E. Dixcn and Co. Messrs E. Dixon and Co., of Hawera and Stratford, make a good display of pianos and phonographs. Waipa coalMessrs J. Masters and C 0.,. Stratford, have a fine exhibit of the new coal from the Waipa collieries, Waikato. There is a very large lump of coal on exhibition and photographs of the works at the mine are also shown. Motor Cars. Messrs Newton King and J. Donald have good exhibits in the motor car section. R. McK, Morbson. Mr R. McK. Morison has a nicely arranged exhibit, including a wide range of trees, hedge plants and flowers in season.
