FOOTBALL.

STRATHMORE V. W.HANCA. (From our Whanga Correspondent.) At Whangamomona on Saturday, under the auspices of the Eastern Subunion, Strathmore (red and black), met the local team (black). The day was ni|ei overhead, but the grouni was wet and greasy from recent rains. There was a good crowd of onlookers, and they were treated to a very strenuous exhibition of the good old game. A bright feature of the match was the splendid good nature shown by both teams right through a very hot game. Mr K. Armstrong carried the whistle, and handled the match in his wellknown thorough manner. Strathmore won the toss, and elected to defend the northern end with the sun behind them, and ware scon attacking in a way that showed the team had made good use of practice matches. The blacks soon rallied, however, and some loose work ended in a scrum, from which the lull want to the reds hacks'.' A long kick by Stewart was marked by Court, who found the line at centre, and then for a few minutes Whanga 'ooke 1 dangerous, good kicking and following up by Hatton being noticeable. Fine pack work by Strathmore and accuracy of their backs shifted play back to the black's line, and a dangerous rusii was stopped by Court at the coiner flag. The reds came again, and blacks vere forced twice. Shortly after roJs from a free kick secured a beautiful goai.—• Strathmore 3, Whanga ml. The forwards then put in some fine loose work, and from a mark in a good position Davidson had a shot at goal, hut failed. The reds' tried desperately to rnake the most use of the spell, hut good tackling and line kicking by Ross kept the blacks' line safe, and half time was called with no further score. On returning, the black forwards, led by Keeley, took play quickly into the corner, and the reds were fotced. In some open play'that followed the red backs showed dangerous, and they . put.in some splendid rushes, but Ross was "on the dot" every time with ccol tackling, and fast following up by Jones put the ball out at red's corner. From the lirie out, some tight pack work resulted' in Knoffloek securing the ball and dropping over the line between the posts. The kick at goal failed.—Strathmore 8, Whanga 3. After this came the most strenuous play of the match, the spectators wildly cheering their respective fancies. Some line out work gave Hendry an opening, and with the ball at his feet he nearly "got there," hut a force resulted. Play was even for a time, then the reds got down to the blacks' ' corner and were found very hard to shift. A force by Hatton opened up the game again and Jbn'es showed hip speed .by carrying the ball from a kick by Stewart into the red's twenty-five, but there was no one to back him up and play centred again. Reds secured the ball by good passes from a line out and were only stopped very close to blacks' line, a scrum in blacks' favor sending play' to centre." "Little did some good kicking for the blacks, but the Strathmore team were equally good in that department, and after some interchanges of kigks to the line hard forward work by both sides kept things even. Up to call of time, both sides put up a game fight, and the match ended with the scores at 3 points each. Until their train left, the visitors w;fere entertained by the local club.
