Two hundred and twenty-five men I were entombed in the burning mine l at Hillcrest, Alberta. Four hun- ; dred escaped. i Some bodies have been recovered, f Others are still living, but there is ,no hope of their recovery. | The mine is blazing fiercely, huge volumes of black smoke pouring up | the mine shaft. Rescuers are unj able to enter the mine, i All rescue work has been abandoned owing to the outbreak of fire. | The total death roll is 197. Sixty ! bodies have been recovered, many of them mangled beyond recognition. The whole male population of the town of Hillcrest was wiped out, and two hundred homes are in mourning. Firedamp exploded at the 1200 ft. level, burying scores of miners beneath the coal and suffocating ..others. Some were found standing, pick in hand, as if about to begin work. The disaster is the worst in the history of Canadian coal mining. (Received 9.0 a.m.) Now’ York, June 21. One hundred bodies have been recovered from the Fernie mine. The search is being continued.
