COUNTY TOLL-GATE.
IN THE NORTH RIDING. FINAL STEPS TAKEN. The Stratford County Council held a special meeting this morning, wjien the final stops were taken preparatory to the erection of a toll-gate in the .North Riding. The full Council was present. On the suggestion of the chairman it was decided that the toll on twoseater motor cars and cycle cars he 2s, tite previous suggestion being to charge Is 6d for cycle cars. It was decided to submit, the suggested schedule of tolls to the Minister for Internal Affairs and to send a letter on the question to the member for the district, Mr J. B. Hine. Some discussion took place on the question of how many toll-gate permits should he applied for, the opinion being expressed that money would be saved if three or four permits were applied for at once, Cr. Thomson supported this view. Cr. Walter said that if the South Riding wanted a toll-gate he would vote in favor of it. But it would be necessary to decide on the actual position of the, gate before applying for a permit. Cr. Christoffel thought that if the main road was put in good order, in concrete or asphalt, out of the proceeds of the toll-gate, the road could then be kept up out of ordinary revenue and the toll-gate could then be abolished.
Cr. Thomson thought it should be intimated to the Minister that 75 per cent of the revenue from the northern toll-gate was to be devoted to the main road in the North Riding for two years. Cr. Anderson moved that only one permit be applied for, ‘ for a gate to be erected twelve to fifteen chains south of where the main road crosses the Waipuku stream. , Cr. Rogers seconded. Cr. Christoffel asked if the South Riding proposed to erect a gate on the same terms as the North Riding gate, would the rest, of the Council agree. Councillors generally said they would support the suggestion.' ■. Cr. Thomson said that, that being so, lie would not oppose the motion. Tiie motion was carried unanimously, and it was decided that as soon as the Minister’s approval is received the North Riding members proceed to call for tenders for the ejection of the necessary buildings, the tenders to close at next meeting.
