A report tabled in the House dealing with the .Northern Territory, states that its development must be a matter for time to involve, as it would be a drain on the resources of the Com-
monwealth without a direct return. In its relation to defence and the maintenance of a White Australia the report suggests that the necessity and justification for an expenditure during the earlier years which should be determined by other than purely commercial considerations. It urges the necessity of border lines and states the policy to be developed, which includes the proposed extensive branch line to Queensland, and altogether involving an outlay of ten millions. Other proposals include the sinking of bores, experimental farm, and other methods of promoting settlement of large areas, which are described as excellent for agricultural and grazing purposes. The aboriginal population is estimated at twenty to twenty-five thousand.
