Replying to the Empire League's deputation, Mr Hobhouse declined to reduce newspaper rates to a penny per pound to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, saying it would involve a loss of £27,000 yearly, and an extra annual expenditure of £BO,000. PENNY POSTAGE. (Received 11.55 a.m.) Melbourne, June 18. At the coming postal conference at Madrid, Mr Wynne proposes suggesting that the next conference be held in Australia. He will resist the proposals of foreign countries to reduce postage to a penny. The Commonwealth at present is losing a large sum annually and cannot afford to permit further reductions.
