THE INQUIRY OPENED. KEEN PUBLIC INTEREST. (Received 12.25 p.m.) Ottawa, June 16. The Empress of Ireland inquiry has opened. Lord Mersey and Messrs Routhier and McLeod are presiding, with four assessors. Mr Newcombe, deputy Minister of Justice, examined the witnesses and there was a huge array of counsel. Mr Newcombe occupied the morning session, outlining the salient facts of the Empress’s loss as already known. Keen public interest is being taken in the inquiry.
