A DISASTER AVERTED.
COLLISION WITH AN ICEBERG. Warned by the Empress of Ireland. (Bt EI*OTBIO TkLBGBAPH—COPTBIGHT' [United Pbjosb Association. 1 London, June 1. The Royal Edward, which has come from Canada, had a great welcome on her arrival at Avonmouth. The passengers declare that Captain Wotton’s promptitude averted disaster in Cabot Strait (Gulf of St. Lawrence). The vessel went at reduced speed owing to the receipt of a wireless message from the now sunken Empress of Ireland giving warning of an iceberg. The iceberg was seen when 2000 yards distant. Captain Wotton ordered the engines to be reversed, and put the ship head on. Boats were swung out, and the passengers were; mustered, some even being placed in the boats. But it was found that the ship was not leaking, though her bows were badlv buckled.
