The tender of Mr E. A. Pacey, Hjyvera, has been accepted for the erection of. a post office at Okaiawa, the .amount being £BSO.—P.A. "At Hokitika (states the Press Association), a howling gale brought up ah enormous sea which is raging in against «Revell Street, causing considerable damage. The position is now more serious than previously. At the inquest at Invercargill on John Lucas, who died from injuries received at the Ocean Beach through a truck passing over his legs, which had to be amputated, a verdict of accidental death was returned, states the Press Association. At the Invercargill Supreme Court, on the application of the Law Society, Justice Denniston made an order suspending J. S. Neave from practising as a barrister and solicitor, on tbe ground of misappropriation of funds. The Press Association adds that his Honor said he could not make the order absolute, as the. matter had to go to the Appeal Court.
At the Inquest on the victims of the =- Main Trunk railway disaster this morning., at Wbangamarino, Josepn .v. Hill, engine-driver of the goods train, '■:. stated that when lie passed the porter sitting on the lever he saw no light ahead of his engine and eight Wag-' gons had gone on the siding, while 41 vehicles were still on the main line .When he saw the head lights of the express just beyond the station building! He gave the danger signal, but the crash, came a few seconds later. He walked to the signal lever, which he found at "Danger," and inspected the signal, itself, which showed a full green light for "all clear."—P.A.
The first meeting of the Board of Agriculture constituted under the Act passed last session was held today (states a Wellington P.A. mes- ". sage). Mr Massey attended t and practically laid down the programme i: for the Board's activities, mentioning noxious weeds, the training of young farmers, forestry, carriage of produce, improvement of permanent pasture, shortage of'farm labor, importation of stock, meat trust, fruit inv "dustry, discovery of. phosphates,.and ■' ■ obtaining a cheap supply. The Board ' also passed a motion of regret at the death of the late Mr D. D. Mac- * FarlaneT i A Wellington Press Association telegram states ;Mr Ramsay McDougall,of Waikato, is suing Mr J. ,W. Chapman, i "of Waikato/in the Supreme Court for v£3OGO damages for alleged misrepresentations in regard to a block of 1830 acres of swamp land between Hamilton and Morrinsville, which was sold by defendant to plaintiff for £10,065. Mr T. M. Wilfdrd, in opening the case, saW*heland in the block contained 95 per cent of water. Plaintiff was induced, to buy by statements that the land only needed ploughing to produce astonishing crops, whereas (counsel alleged) it was absolutely worthless, and was part of 10,000 acres which were given away.
