THE CERALDINE MURDER.
VERDICT OF MANSLAUGHTER. IPib Pebm Amooiatiost.) Timaru, June 10. The Geraldine murder case occupied the Court all day. The jury, after 2* hours retirement, at; ten p.m. returned a verdict of manslaughter. The evidence for the prosecution was the same as at the inquest. The defence offered as defences: Self-defence, blows under provocation; and the imbecility of the accused. Cripps swore that Stevenson struck him first. Four doctors were called. Two of them considered Cripps an imbecilo, and two described him as a degenerate, but with a knowledge of right and wrong. , Other witnesses stated that Cripps was stupid as a boy and youth, and that Stevenson was cantankerous and difficult to get on with. The Judge, saying he ought not to be at large again, sentenced Cripps to hard labor for life.
