STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. R- Kirkwood) and Ci's. R. McK. Morison, J. B. Richards, J. W. Boon, T. Reader, J. Masters, and N. J. King. Crs. J. Fredric and J. H. Thompson forwarded apologies for absence. REPORTS.
Overseer. The Overseer reported:— I beg to report on the progress of works during the past month: Metal patching has been done on Broadway North, Cloton Road, Cordelia Street, Swansea Road, Miranda Street, Portia Street and Brecon Road. 333 cubic yards of shingle, and 23 yards of boulders have been carted from the river and crushed; 111 yards of boulders carted out by Sharrock Bros, have also been crushed. Seyton Street footpath between Broadway and Juliet Street lias been gravelled. Footpaths in Regan Street between Broadway and Miranda Street have been graded and re-gravelled. I have commenced the work of getting stone out of the river. This work will be proceeded, with as opportunity offers; I estimate the quantity‘carted out in 2i days at 100 cubic yards. Protection fences round drains in septic tank paddock have been renewed. Fences on Reserves No. 864, 866, and 822 Miranda and Portia Street South are nearly completed. The branding yard at the abattoirs has been erected. The waterworks at abattoirs has had the necessary attention during the month. The work of fixing asphalt footpaths in Broadway Central is in hand. Kerbing: There has been little progress made with this work during the past month, owing to the unsuitable weather. The work of improving Flinty Road, near.the A. and P. gates, will he put in hand to-morrow. Brains: I have to report that water-closets have been erected at Mr Morison’s new house, without permits first bring obtained from the Council as provided by the by-laws.—Adopted.
Abattoir Manager. The Abattoir Manager reported:— I have the honor to submit my report on the working of the abattoirs during the month of May, 1914. The following stock were slaughtered: Cows 77, heifers 29, oxen 2, calves 2, sheep 278, lambs 37, pigs, 83; tripes prepared 51, cowheels 4. Slaughter* ing fees £63 14s Gd. Stock com demned: Cows, 3 wholly, 3 partially; sheep, 1 wholly; pigs, 3 wholly. The branding yard has been erected- The supply pipe to the hydraulic ram was cut and cleaned, it being more than half full of silt in places. The hydraulic ram has been overhauled, and new washers put in where roquired. The hot water service lias been put into ‘tho v house on the abattoir property. The tank* and sump have been removed from the back door of same. A wooden water trough has been put into the receiving yard.—Adopted.
Borough Inspector. The BOrongh Inspector reported that during the past month he . had impounded 75 head of cattle, five persons were convicted of breaches of by-laws, twenty street lights were put in, and two lights were put in at the Town Hall. Works Committee. Sharrock Bros.’ Contract.—Your Committee decided to allow Sharrock Bros, to give up their contract, and authorised the Town Clerk to pay them in full for all stone delivered to date, on condition that they signed a receipt in full satisfaction of all claims against the Council. This has been done. Hamlet Street South.—A petition has been received from ratepayers owning property in Hamlet StreetSouth, asking the Council to construct' a footpath on the west side between Celia Street and Warwick Hoad. The Secretary of the Municipal ssociatiou wrote that- the annual conference would he held in Wellington on July 14th.—It was decided to urk Mr J. B. Hine, ,M.P., to represent/ the Council at the conference. Cr. Boon gave notice to move the following motion at next ’meeting: That the by-laws he revised to give the Council power to charge for water according to resolution carried last year. , r , : • , ~,. King applied' to surrender his present lease of section 301 which expires in 1920, and for the granting of a renewal, under the provisions of”section 141 of the Municipal Corporations Act.-Referred to Reserves Committee to report.
The Minister for Railways wrote stating that to deal with motor traffic across railways the Department was agreeable to supply special signs to indicate that there whs a crossing on the road, such sign to bo placed 150 yards to 200 yards away from the line. It was decided that the signs would not be of any use in the Borough. Mr J. D. Healy forwarded plans of a stable to be erected at. the bade of, the Club Hotel. The walls would be of corrugated iron on, t ,w ( ooden framing. There would be wooden flooring to the -stalls.—Cr. Boon thought that a concrete or earth floor or floor of earth over concrete should be demanded.—Cr. Richards said lie did not believe in loosening the by-law regarding brick walls, as other tenants might extend to the boundary of their sections and it would be necessary to make fish of one and flesh, of another. On Ci. Boon’s motion it was decided to demand concrete floors.
