LAMB SKINS FOR FUR.

Sheepbreeders may be interested in what looks like a very successful attempt to establish an extensive industry in the breeding of lambs for “fur” in Kansas. At present the lambs are obtained by crossing Lincoln ewes with the fur-bearing Caracul rams from Asiatic Russia, but >t is believed that quite satisfactory results ' could be obtained with Cotswold, Leicester. or Wensievdale ewes. According to a report issued by the United States Department of Agriculture, three kinds of “fur” are obtained from the Lincoln t and Caracul cross. There are the first grade, or “Persian lamb,” if the curls are small and very tight; the second grade, or “Astrakan,” if the curls are looser; and the third grade, or “Krimmer,” when the “fur” is streaked with grey. The hybrids resulting from the cross are said to be excellent rustlers, very hardy, and well able to stand extremes of both drought and cold.
