The Coroner held an inquest into the death of a newly-born infant Jourid in a pit on Milson’s Line oti May 1 25th. gave evidence of a statement made to the police by accused, Lydia Schulte, single, who admitted that the child was hers, and that she strangled it in ber bedroom with a piece of string, afterwards wrapping it in paper and a sugar sack and putting it in the gravel pit. Accused added: “The father did not know qnything about what I had done.” Medical evidence showed that the child had lived. The organs were healthy. Death was due to strangulation. The Coroner returned a verdict -of wilful murder. Accused was brought before the Court and pleaded not guilty. She was committed for trial at next sitings of the Supreme Court.v
